Jaffa: the lighthouse

Jaffa Light, the lighthouse in Old Jaffa (Joppa; Yafo), was first constructed by the French in the 1860’s and then was re-worked by the British in the 1930’s. It remained in full operation for just over a century.

An Armenian Christian family, the Zakarian family, now owns Simon the Tanner’s house, operates the lighthouse, and cares for the site on which they’re located. Simon the Tanner’s house and the lighthouse are virtually one, with the lighthouse located closer to the sea.
