Bruner on John 12

“The crown of this chapter [John 12] is Jesus’ Sermon of Crucified Glory in the exact middle of the chapter (vs. 20-36), where Jesus objectively summarizes the meaning of his whole coming and going, epitomized this memorable week. The climax of the chapter is Jesus’ concluding Sermon Cry of Transparency (vs. 44-50), where he pleads subjectively with his believers to believe into him. These two urgent appeals are Jesus’ Valedictory Sermons to the World, and they seek to call all their hearers and readers, one more (and perhaps, for some, one last) time, to the altar of trust in himself as God’s Light, Word, and Work.”
