While physical training has some value, training in holy living is useful for everything. It has promise for this life now and the life to come. (1 Timothy 4:8 CEB)
Allow me to plant a single seed.
We all know what happens if you don’t have a consistent physical exercise program as one of your life’s highest priorities. Unfortunately, you can just look at me and know something of that truth. I struggle with making that happen. I’m working on it, but it’ comes and goes. No doubt, I’ll pay for such with a shorter life here.
Now what will happen if you don’t have a consistent spiritual exercise program as one of your life’s highest priorities? That’s right. You’re going to be spiritually weak and flabby. And then, in light of this Scripture, I must ask, “Your life will be … what?”
I daily engage in spiritual training. I’m no spiritual giant, but I shudder to think what my engagement with God and my living would be like if I had no real spiritual discipline except “going to church” and attending Bible class. I can’t imagine what my existence would be like or what it would be like in terms of effect on others.
In the name of Jesus, Father, bring fresh conviction to my heart and to us all as to our need to be in a daily cross-training program with you. As you well up this conviction in our hearts, Father, do whatever is necessary to move us to the next level from conviction to action. Amen.
